The Linderhof park and palace complex is also a must. The French Sun King, Louis XIV, was the inspiration and role model for the construction of this castle. Behind the castle, romantic paths lead through a spacious park with a Moorish kiosk, a grotto on a small lake, and waterfalls at the Neptune fountain. Linderhof is the only castle that King Ludwig II completed and lived in. You can combine this with a visit to Oberammergau, world famous for its passion plays, its Frescos, and its wood carvings.
It’s 45 km (28 miles) from Lermoos,
but we recommend taking the scenic route: Drive from Lermoos towards Reutte. Just before Reutte, take the turnoff for Plansee. Continue along the beautiful Plansee lake to Ammerwald through the Ettal Forest to the Linderhof turnoff. From here, it’s not far to Oberammergau. Drive back towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen via Ettal with its interesting monastery, and on to Lermoos. Length of the round trip: 102 km (63 miles)
